Margaret Qualley’s wedding weekend is the blueprint

Actor, model, and Chanel muse Margaret Qualley married Grammy-winning record producer Jack Antonoff in New Jersey last weekend, surrounded by family, famous friends (like frequent Antonoff collaborator Taylor Swift), and several dozen uninvited guests (largely, Swift’s fans). As a fashion editor, I skimmed past the attendees and immediately latched on to Qualley’s trifecta of bridal looks—and specifically, her bridal Mary Janes.

Qualley chose a pair of satin Chanel Mary Janes for three wedding looks captured by photographers outside the event. First, she wore the flats to her rehearsal dinner, under a scoop-neck white puff-sleeve midi dress with a cascading skirt and buttons up the back. On her wedding day, she brought out the dainty flats again, pairing them with a plunging satin Chanel halter-neck gown for the ceremony, and with a semi-sheer Molly Goddard midi for the reception.

That Qualley wore Chanel to say “I do” simply makes sense: She closed Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2021 runway and has appeared in several campaigns for the house, after all. That she specifically wore custom Mary Janes struck me as a refreshingly practical twist on bridal footwear. The white satin was quintessential wedding material, while the buckled silhouette struck quirky and practical notes. At a moment when every corner of fashion is obsessed with ballet flats and Mary Janes in particular, Qualley’s wedding wardrobe confirmed that comfortable wedding shoes are just as elegant as heels.

Why change your shoes midway through the festivities when a single comfortable and elegant pair will serve? Inspired by Qualley’s vintage bridal style, I’ve found nine more little white flats that are perfect for brides to wear on their wedding day (and afterward).

Mary Janes are Le Monde Beryl’s most well-known silhouette, so the label is a must on any list of bridal flats. This pair has the same sheen as Qualley’s wedding-day flats, with a low heel and lightly padded insole.

Sizes: 5½–11½

Colors: White satin

Sandy Liang’s cult-beloved ballet flats were just released in white satin exclusively for Ssense’s bridal edit. I suspect the most runway-inclined brides will cherish the pointe-shoe-inspired square toe and dainty buckle as much as their wedding gown—these flats are that rarely in stock.

Sizes: 35–41 IT

Colors: White

Materials: Satin, leather, rubber

Tamara Mellon released her long-awaited take on the Mary Jane this year, complete with an elongated toe box and a teeny-tiny heel. The cream patent fits a bridal dress code, but also has everyday-outfit appeal, thanks to its more cream-adjacent shade and button-embellished strap.

Sizes: 5–12

Colors: White patent, red patent, black patent

I got married in Loeffler Randall’s famous Camellia heels, but I wish I’d had the foresight to also order these little satin flats. Having now tried on pairs in the store, I can attest that they have a soft sole, an elastic strap that’s secure without pinching, and a dainty, rounded toe that will look gorgeous with midi and maxi dresses. My bridal buyer’s remorse is what pushed me to order a chocolate-brown pair for fall; future brides, consider a pair for your nuptials and daily wear.

Sizes: 5–12

Colors: White, black, chocolate, terracotta, and more

If there’s ever a day to make your accessories sparkle, it’s your wedding day. Jimmy Choo’s Mary Jane flat comes with a bejeweled strap for head-to-toe shimmer, plus a comfortable slide-on silhouette.

Sizes: 34–43 EU

Colors: Linen patent, black patent

A three-centimeter block heel still qualifies as a flat in my book. This patent leather pair provides a little lift for standing tall at the altar, with a gentle pitch that won’t be pinching your toes by the end of the big day.

Sizes: 35–42 FR

Colors: White, black, red, pink, and more

The perfect pair of Mary Janes for a minimalist bride does exist, and it hails from Los Angeles–based label Co. A streamlined white leather upper and stark black elasticated strap can go from the rehearsal dinner to the morning-after brunch.

Sizes: 36–41 IT

Colors: White/black strap

For the Valentino Rockstud collection devotee: a pair of wedding-day flats embellished with the designer’s signature decal. (After all, the best bridal look should ultimately also reflect your style away from the aisle.) The angular pointed toe provides the hint of juxtaposition suited to a tea-length dress with a confectionary full skirt.

Sizes: 35½–42 IT

Colors: White

If you’re trying to channel Qualley’s outfit through a designer lens, there are archival pairs fitting a bridal moment, if you know where to look. This shimmering pair with Chanel’s signature cap toe is perfect for dancing into the morning under the glow of an after-party disco ball. (Pairs in additional sizes can be found on Vestiaire Collective, the RealReal, and Fashionphile.)

Sizes: 36½

Colors: Silver glitter/black
